Kautapen Lodge – Week 6: Febuary 11th to 17th, 2024

At Kau Tapen, we prioritize creating memorable experiences. While fishing is undoubtedly a highlight, we aim for it to be just one part of a larger, enjoyable getaway. The allure of landing the world’s largest sea trout serves as the perfect excuse to escape the monotony of everyday life and immerse oneself in great company, exquisite cuisine, and plenty of laughter. Let go of your worries and embrace the wild charm of Tierra del Fuego.

Throughout the week, our lodge welcomed a diverse group of guests from the USA, UK, and New Zealand. While some were returning guests, we were thrilled to introduce many new faces to our community this year. The Rio Grande offers an exceptional opportunity to learn about anadromous fish and two-handed fly casting, although mastering its intricacies may require a few days of practice. Whether perfecting your casting technique or keeping the fly in the water, consistent effort is sure to yield rewarding results.

Last week, the river experienced a gradual decrease in water level, shifting from medium-low to low. Fortunately, the weather conditions remained favorable, with minimal wind and overall pleasant weather. Fishing conditions were deemed good, and the presence of cloudy weather added to the positive atmosphere. Looking ahead, there is anticipation for rain in the coming week, which is expected to enhance fishing prospects. With fresh fish being landed daily and promising forecasts, the conditions seem conducive to productive and enjoyable fishing following the anticipated rainfall.

Noteworthy catches included several high-teen fish landed by Jon, Bruce, Jim, and John, with David landing a notable 20-pounder in the lower section of the river with the assistance of Christian. It has been a fantastic year for Rio Grande’s sea trout, with many healthy specimens, and we eagerly await what the river has in store for the weeks to come. While this season has required adaptation to varying weather and water conditions, the Rio Grande has rewarded patient and persistent anglers time and time again.

This week began on a positive note and ended with smiling faces. With stable conditions and anglers becoming more accustomed to two-handed casting, it proved to be the most successful week so far in terms of both quantity and quality of catches.
